Im Jahre 362 schickte Julian Apostata seinen Freund Oribasius nach Delphi, um von der Pythia zu erkunden, wie seine Chancen bei einem Feldzug gegen die Perser stünden.
Darüber hat Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909) ein Gedicht geschrieben:
The Last Oracle

eipate toi basilei, xamai pese daidalos aula.
ouketi PHoibos exei kaluban, ou mantida daphnen,
ou pagan laleousan. apesbeto kai lalon udor. (1)

Years have risen and fallen in darkness or in twilight,
Ages waxed and waned that knew not thee nor thine,
While the world sought light by night and sought not thy light,
Since the sad last pilgrim left thy dark mid shrine.
Dark the shrine and dumb the fount of song thence welling,
Save for words more sad than tears of blood, that said:
Tell the king, on earth has fallen the glorious dwelling,
And the watersprings that spake are quenched and dead.

Ist das nicht eines gebildeten Menschen unwürdig?

Bei wikipedia steht dazu:
Das letzte Orakel erteilte die Pythia angeblich 362 n. Chr. dem Arzt Oreibasios, der es im Auftrag des heidnischen Kaisers Julian aufsuchte. Er wollte wissen, ob das Orakel in einer sich dem Christentum zuwendenden Welt noch Zukunft habe, worauf Pythia geantwortet haben soll:

„Künde dem Kaiser, das schöngefügte Haus ist gefallen. Phoibos Apollon besitzt keine Zuflucht mehr, der heilige Lorbeer verwelkt, seine Quellen schweigen für immer, verstummt ist das Murmeln des Wassers.“

Historische Beurteilung: Unecht, christliche Fiktion. Eine solche Bankrotterklärung hätte sich das Orakel von Delphi schwerlich selbst ausgestellt, solange es noch existierte. Überdies gibt es Hinweise darauf, dass das Orakel noch eine Weile nach Julian fortbestand.[18]

Wenn jemand das Heidentum propagiert, dann stellt man sich am liebsten einen philosophischen Weisen vor - aber so war war Julian nicht. Er hatte auch eine Neigung zu Orakeln, Tieropfern, Leberschau usw. Kurioserweise hat er sich dann öfters gar nicht an die Empfehlungen gehalten. Ein komplizierter Charakter.

nicht durchschaut und als lächerlich betrachtet hat.
Es muss doch gespürt haben, dass das Unfug ist.
Oder waren da irrationale, menschliche Ängste im Spiel oder andere
psychologische Faktoren.
Vlt. war er traumatisiert oder hoffte
insgeheim doch auf die Macht der Götter in schwierigen Situtionen.

Als Kind entkam er dem Massaker am Kaiserhofe, später studierte er Philosophie und ließ sich in Mysterienkulte einweihen, als Feldherr und Kaiser bewies er erstaunliche Tatkraft. Das Bild, das lange Zeit von Julian (331-363 n. Chr.), dem Neffen von Kaiser Konstantin d. Gr., gezeichnet wurde, war das eines Herrschers, der das Rad der Geschichte zurückdrehen wollte, indem er die heidnischen Kulte wiederzubeleben versuchte. Marion Giebel zeigt in ihrer Biografie auch die anderen Facetten dieser faszinierenden Persönlichkeit: der feinsinnige Literat, der philosophisch gebildete Kaiser, der das Reich im Sinne Marc Aurels oder Trajans regieren und reformieren wollte, um es gegen die Bedrohung von innen und außen zu wappnen. Welchen Verlauf hätte die Weltgeschichte wohl genommen, wenn Julian nicht so früh gestorben wäre?
