3. Plutarch (ca. 45 – 125 u.Z.): Über den Ruhm der Athener

Again, the news of the battle of Marathon Thersippus of Eroeadae brought back, as Heracleides Ponticus relates; but most historians declare that it was Eucles who ran in full armour, hot from the battle, and, bursting in at the doors of the first men of the state, could only say, „Hail! we are victorious! [χαίρετε. νικῶμεν]” and straightway expired.

[Moralia 347C]

3.a Plutarch: Über die Arglist des Herodot

Here, at least, is a point which supports Herodotus against the charge that he received a large sum of money from the Athenians in return for his flattery of them. If he had read this account to the Athenians, they would not have let it pass and would not have tolerated his story of Philippides summoning the Spartans to battle on the ninth (when the battle was over), especially since, as he says himself, Philippides reached Sparta the day after he had left Athens – unless indeed the Athenians waited until the victory was won before they sent for their allies.
And yet the story that he received a gift of ten talents from Athens, on the proposal of Anytus, comes from an Athenian, Diyllus, who is quite a well-known historian.

[Moralia 862a-b]

Zu Moralia 347C: Die Handschriften überliefern durchweg "χαίρετε καὶ χαίρομεν."
Die oben Formel ist von einem Herausgeber gemäß Lukian geändert worden.
