Baton wird der Neuen Komödie zugerechnet. Von den Philosophen akzeptierte er nur Epikur. Der folgende Text stellt ein längeres Fragment einer Komödie ("Der Mörder") dar, von der sonst nicht viel erhalten ist.

Τῶν φιλοσόφων τοὺς σώφρονας ἐνταυθοῖ καλῶ,
τοὺς ἀγαθὸν αὑτοῖς οὐ διδόντας οὐδὲ ἕν,
τοὺς τὸν φρόνιμον ζητοῦντας ἐν τοῖς περιπάτοις
καὶ ταῖς διατριβαῖς ὥσπερ ἀποδεδρακότα.
ἄνθρωπ‘ ἀλάστωρ, διὰ τί συμβολὰς ἔχων
νήφεις; τί τηλικοῦτον ἀδικεῖς τοὺς θεούς;
τί τἀργύριον, ἄνθρωπε, τιμιώτερον
[σ]αὐτοῦ τέθεικας ἢ πέφυκε τῇ φύσει;
ἀλυσιτελὴς εἶ τῇ πόλει πίνων ὕδωρ.
τὸν γὰρ γεωργὸν καὶ τὸν ἔμπορον κακοῖς.

I’m summoning the prudent philosophers here,
the ones who never allow themselves anything good,
and who seek for “the wise men” in their walks
and their discussions as if he were a runaway slave.
Miserable creature – if you have money to contribute to a party,
why are you sober? Why do you wrong the gods so much?
Why do you value your cash, sir,
more than yourself or what it’s really worth?
You’re no use to the city if you drink water,
because you’re hurting the farmer and the trader;
whereas I increase their income by getting drunk.
Next, as soon as the sun rises you’re carrying your flask around
and constantly checking the oil, with the result that someone’s likely
to think you’re carrying around a water-clock rather than an oil-flask!
