Theompompus in book 2 of his Philippics says that in Paeonia (1) the oxen grow horns so large that they hold three or four choes [χόας] (2), and the kings make drinking-cups from them, overlaying the rims with silver or gold; and Philoxenus of Cythera (3) says in his poem entitled The Banquet,

πίνετο νεκτάρεον
πῶμ' ἐν χρυσέαις προτομαῖς
τελέων κεράτων, ἐβρέχοντο
δ' οὐ κατὰ μικρόν.

The draught of nectar was drunk from gold goblets, whole horns that had been lopped, and the guests quickly became soaked.
