Storks [οἱ πελαργοί] have a very clever device for warding off the bats [τὰς νυκτερίδας] that would damage their eggs: one touch from the bats turns them to wind-eggs [ἀνεμιαῖα] and makes them infertile. Accordingly, this is the remedy [φάρμακον] they use to prevent this happening. They lay the leaves of a plane-tree [πλαντάνου φύλλα] upon their nests, and directly the bats come near the storks, they are benumbed and become incapable of doing harm [ναρκῶσι καὶ γίνονται λυπεῖν ἀδύνατοι].

On swallows [ταῖς χελιδόσιν] too Nature has bestowed a like gift: cockroaches [αἱ σίλφαι] injure their eggs. Therefore the mother-birds protect their chicks with celery leaves [σελίνου κόμην], and hence the cockroaches cannot reach them.

(Aelian: On Animals I 37)

- αἱ σίλφαι: Gemeint ist vermutlich das Insekt Stenopteryx hirundinis.
