Plutarch, Aussprüche von Spartanern (Moralia 213 C):
The inhabitants of Asia were accustomed to give to the king of Persia the title of ‘the Great’, but Agesilaus said, “In what, pray, is he greater than I, unless he is more just and more self-controlled [τί δαὶ ἐκεῖνος ἐμοῦ μείζων, ἔφη, εἰ μὴ δικαιότερος καὶ σωφρονέστερος;]?”

[Plutarch, Moralia III. Ed. by Frank Cole Babbitt. Cambridge (Mass.)/London 72004, pp. 274 sq.]

were accustomed to give

Warum nicht "giving"?
vgl.
I look forward to seeing you soon.

„Giving“ ist einzig korrekt heutzutage.
Babbitt schreibt „give“ und ist kein Ignorant.

@Patroklos

The key is to use the -ing form (seeing) after the phrase "look forward to," as "to" acts as a preposition.

In the sentence “I look[/I am looking] forward to seeing you”, the word “seeing” is NOT a verb form (i.e. not a higher order part of speech) and, therefore, it is NOT in the present continuous tense, nor in a progressive form, for that matter, by any stretch of the imagination.

Mr. President benütze nicht die positive Sprachform, also accustomed to giving, sondern ausschließlich die entschiedene Negation, Not accustomed to give in!

The Great Complement Shift … where gerund complements (verbs ending in -ing acting as nouns) have increasingly replaced infinitive complements (to + verb). Sie beginnt bereit im 18. Jahrhundert.

As regards the factors influencing the choice between the two patterns, similar servations are made for both accustomed and object.

First of all, Rudanko finds that in the case of extractions, (e.g. relativization, as in and yet the air there was somehow purer than that which she has been accustomed to breathe [p. 105]) to infinitive complements are favoured over to -ing complements, a finding in line with the Complexity Principle, formulated by Rohdenburg (1996), where more explicit variants are preferred in cognitively more complex environments (see p. 106).

Second, it is shown that there are semantic implications regarding the choice between the two complementation patterns. The semantic factor influencing the choice between the two complementation patterns is concerned with whether or not the lower subject 'involves or encodes a sense of choice' (p. 133). This distinction is related to the semantic roles of agent (+Choice) and patient (-Choice). This semantic property of the lower subjects proves to be a significant factor, with to infinitive complements favoured when the lower subject is agentive (+ Choice) and to -ing complements disproportionately frequent in non-agentive contexts (-Choice).

In chapter 6, which covers a vast time period, this semantic difference disappears in current English with the to -ing pattern now functioning in both contexts.

The NOW corpus (News on the Web). It contains 24.7 billion words of data from web-based newspapers and magazines from 2010 to the present time (the most recent day is 2026-04-13).
