Philon von Byzanz (2. Jhdt. v.u.Z.), Mechanik (Μηχανικὴ σύνταξις), Buch 4: Belopoiika:
He (Ctesibius (1)) constructed vessels, similar in form to medicine capsules but without lids. To make them resilient and strong he hammered the bronze of which he made them. First he made a wax form, and cast them with proper [wall] thickness. He turned the inside, by tool engine, and worked the surface to make it even, straight along the ruler, and smooth. He then correspondingly introduced the bronze piston, which could run through [the so prepared cylinder] and could contact it with the periphery that was made similarly straight and smooth, so that fluid could not be pressed through, even when all [available] force was applied. Do not wonder or doubt that it can be so constructed. For in the flute played by hand, which we call hydraulis, the bellows for sending air into the submerged wind chest also is of bronze, and is worked similarly to the aforesaid vessels.

Ctesibius demonstrated it for us. He also showed the nature of air and what strong and rapid motion it has. At the same time [he showed] the construction of vessels confining the air, having applied builder’s glue around the vessel, having set an end piece on the small disk, and driving in the [resulting] piston, with die and hammer ... When force had thus been applied, and the die then was removed, the piston sprang out of the vessel with great force. Often fire came out with it ... Having constructed the vessels as described, he adapted the form of the catapult to them ... They caused the arms to rock apart with great resilience and to throw the stone quite a remarkable distance.

Leitmanuskript: Das Manuskript Aya-Sofya 3713 (Istanbul).
